WASHINGTON (AP) -- Two satellite radio companies hoping to merge have released details of future pricing plans. The packages would allow customers buying yet-to-be offered new radios a choice of channels.
XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio announced the merger deal last February, then valued at 4.7 billion dollars. The merger requires approval from antitrust regulators and the Federal Communications Commission.
The post-merger pricing plans just announced range from six dollars, 99 cents per month for 50 channels from one company to $16.99 a month where customers could keep their existing service, and choose from channels offered on the other.
For example, a subscriber could listen to Major League Baseball games currently on DC-based XM and also later tune in to National Football League games on Sirius.
Currently, the price of a monthly subscription for either company is $12.95 cents and there is no "a la carte" option.
The proposed combination faces steep regulatory challenges and is opposed by consumer groups and the National Association of Broadcasters.
